SONS OF GOD
There has been much conflict amongst scholars as they have
sought to expound the true meaning of these words in Genesis. Some
hotly contending the phrase means 'angels' and others equally
emphatic it means the descendants of Adam and Eve through Seth who
were called, (perhaps with a touch of contempt by those who had
turned away from God), the 'sons of God,' because they followed
God.
Much the same as were the followers of Christ first called
Christians at Antioch by unbelievers, because they followed Him.
There are two events in particular which they quote.
The first in Genesis 6 and the second in Job.
First. The Angels.
Here, the Word of God clearly discloses that the descendants
of Adam and Eve were those 'sons of God' who walked in the same
path Seth walked in but, despite this inheritance, some of them
intermarried with the descendants of Cain, the 'daughters of men'
and they, and their offspring, were those of whom Moses wrote about
in Genesis.
None of them were angels as the Word of God makes clear. They
were the offspring of godly men and women, 'the sons and daughters
of God' and of those who did not follow God, the 'sons and
daughters of men.'
They were all human, some the descendants of Seth, known as
the sons of God because they followed God and some known as the
sons of men because they followed their father Cain. However this
union between the godly and the ungodly gradually drew almost all
of them away from God to the point where the whole world was so
corrupt that God said, and it is necessary to read and understand
His words clearly for it underlines the fact that all these were
men and women whom He had created.
The passage is found in Genesis 6:6-7.
'And the LORD said I will destroy MAN WHOM I HAVE CREATED from
the face of the earth.'
Those who make the assumption that these were angels who had
left the eternal delights of their own principality for a fleeting
pleasure destined to fade away in a brief lifetime, as they well
knew because of Adam's death already, do no honour to God and give
little credit to the intelligence of angels who were created as
spiritual beings to serve God and to be ministers to His highest
Creation.
It is inconceivable they would be so foolish!
Inconceivable too how any scholar could think such a concept
adds to the Omnipotence of God, or to His Eternal Plan for His
Creation, but apparently few have 'thought out' the implications
that are inherent here.
To name one a few.
In order for the angels to be able to marry women of the
earth and father children, they would have to be of the flesh.
They would have to have the power to 'create' a body capable
of reproduction, a prerogative of God Himself and His Son through
whom He made all things..
If God did not create ALL FLESH, and angels could, how can we
ever be sure of anything?
Scripture is emphatic about ALL THINGS being created by God,
through Christ, and filled with praise for the wonder of it all.
Deuteronomy 4:32. 'Ask now of the days that are past, which
were before thee since the day that God created man upon the
earth'.
And Peter's revelation of all this?
'All things continue as they were from the beginning of the
creation..by the Word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth
standing out of the water, and in the water: whereby the world that
then was, being overflowed with water perished.'
2 Peter 3:4-6.
'I have made the earth, and created man upon it. I, even my
hands have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I
commanded.'
Isaiah 45:12.
To which Paul attests!
'For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the
world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are
made, (His workmanship), even His eternal power and Godhead, so
that they are without excuse.'
Romans 1:20.
Jeremiah 32:27. 'Behold I am the LORD. The God of All Flesh.
Is there anything too hard for me?'
Colossians.
Colossians 1:16-17. 'For by Him were all things created, that
are in heaven and that are in earth, visible and invisible.
Whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or
powers. ALL THINGS were created by Him, and for Him, and He is
before all things, and by Him ALL THINGS consist.'
Malachi 2:10. 'Have we not all one Father? Hath not one God
created us?'
Ephesians 2:10. 'We are His Workmanship, created in Christ
Jesus unto good works.'
Matthew 19:4. Mark 10:6. 'Have ye not read, that He which made
them at the beginning, made them male and female?'
Isaiah 43:7. 'I have created him for my glory, I have formed
him, I have made him.'
Isaiah 44:24. 'Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, and He that
formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh ALL things.'
John is as equally adamant!
John 1:3. 'All things were made by Him; and without Him was
not anything made that was made.'
Paul emphatic!
1 Corinthians 8:6. 'But to us, there is but one God. The
Father, of whom are all things. And one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom
are all things, and we by Him.'
Revelation confirms it!
Revelation 4:11. 'Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory
and honour and power. For Thou hast created all things, and for thy
pleasure they are, and were, created.'
Those very words we read before spoken in Genesis at this
time, over a hundred years before the Flood, reveal the same truth.
Moses wrote!
Genesis 6:6-7. 'And it repented the LORD that He had made man
upon the earth, and the LORD said I will destroy man whom I have
created from the face of the earth.'
And this we know was because 'all flesh' which God had
'created' had corrupted their way upon the earth.
All FLESH. NOT angels!
2 Peter 2:5. 'And God spared not the old world, but saved
Noah, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly.'
Matthew 24:38-39. Luke 17:26-27. 'As in the days that were
before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying, and
giving in marriage until the day, and knew not until the flood came
and took them all away.'
It seems incomprehensible that any scholar who believes the
Scriptures are inspired and a revelation of God's Plan for us, from
creation and the fall to our redemption, can also believe that any
other person, or power, could have any part in the wonder of God's
Hand in that Creation.
The Sadducees, in an attempt to 'catch Him in His words,' once
posed the question to our Lord, 'whose wife would she be?' when
they brought up the law of inheritance and it is not difficult to
understand our Lord's answer when he said. 'Ye do err, not knowing
the Scriptures, nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they
neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of
God in heaven.' Mark 12:18-26.
He was telling His questioners that in the heavenlies we are
a spiritual flesh, the like of which we do not, nor cannot yet,
know and from the reading of Mark we can see they understood what
Jesus was saying. Paul certainly did. 1 Corinthians 15:38-40.
'God giveth it a body as it has pleased Him, and to every seed
his own body. All flesh is not the same flesh; but there is one
kind of flesh of men, another of beasts, another of fishes, another
of birds. There are celestial bodies, and earthly bodies, but the
glory of the celestial is one kind, and the glory of the earthly
another.'
In other words both the heavenly life and the earthly life
are endowed by God with bodies fitted for the sphere in which they
live and, each differ so much, that neither one nor the other can
live together as one in a place which has not been intended for
them unless, certainly not until, God changes the earthly to the
heavenly Himself.
Paul goes on to write in verse 50.
'Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God.'
And further in Galatians 5:17.
'The flesh lusteth against the spirit, and the spirit against
the flesh, and these are contrary the one to the other.'
God is the one who 'maketh His angels spirits', and spirit and
flesh are so different it seems beyond understanding that some
scholars still say that this spirit, 'which is contrary to flesh,'
could not only make flesh but make flesh capable of bringing forth
life.
Further, because of their nature and their heavenly habitation.
Why should they want to?
There is no doubt that our Lord was telling the Sadducees that
life in the heavenlies was real and of a spiritual nature, not
compatible with the flesh. However He also said that, despite this,
we would know one another for who we were because He added.
'God is not the God of the dead but the God of the living.'
Mark 12:26-27.
Job likewise wrote, 'I know that my redeemer liveth, and though
this body be destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God for myself,
with my own eyes.' Job 19:25-27.
However rather than accept what the Word says, some men have
let their imaginations run riot at this point insisting that angels
created flesh and became as men.
One early expositor has. quote.
'Another fact worthy of note is that angels are always spoken
of as of the masculine gender. The inference is that all angels are
of the masculine gender, that is are males. If this be true, the
reason why they do not marry in Heaven is because there are no
female angels to marry. But it does not follow that they do not
have male generative organs, and cannot cohabit with females of the
human race.' end of quote.
Why would God create angel with `generative' organs if there
were no reason for doing?
God did this for His lesser creation, Adam, providing him with
a female companion for a specific reason. 'To be fruitful and
multiply and replenish the earth.' But, in answer to the reasoning
of the writer I quote above, I can only ask again, and almost
incredulously. "Why would God provide 'generative organs' if He
did not intend those generative organs to be productive?"
And he offers this foolish argument about angels marrying
'females of the human race' despite the fact that, when God had
finished all of Creation, He pronounced everything He had created
was 'good.'
He continues. quote.
'It is not improbable that angels, BY SINKING LOWER in the
scale of being COULD ACQUIRE sexual power of which they have
previously been destitute, and yet they have such power, if we are
to believe the statement of Genesis 6:1-4. The whole thing hinges
on the correspondence between the bodies of angels and the bodies
of human beings. Are men and angels then so dissimilar that under
certain conditions there could not be union between them?' end of
quote.
What a dreadful imagination!
He suggests that by 'sinking lower in the scale of being' they
'could acquire' this special 'power' which gift God gave only to
our first parents in order to 'replenish the earth?'
The 'whole thing' does not 'hinge on the correspondence
between the bodies of angels and the bodies of human beings.'
It rests SOLELY on the FACT that God has given to each of
these two separate beings, different and particular natures and
abilities suited for each of their habitations.
God created man and woman not only for His pleasure but to be
His companions and to replenish the earth. And after the fall, to
be the vessel, though weak, through whom His own Son would take on
flesh and be the One to ultimately defeat satan and give us victory
over death itself.
Angels' have a specific purpose in God's Plan and just as we
have been special God given gifts, 1 Corinthians 12, they too have
special gifts.
They are "ministering spirits, sent forth to minister to the
saints.' Hebrews 1:14.
In another passage he has this. quote.
'If the sons of Seth and the daughters of Cain were meant why
did not Moses say so? It is not sufficient to say that the men of
Moses' time knew what he meant. The Scriptures are supposed to
mean what they say.' end of quote.
That is one of the most foolish statements of all and means he
has not accepted the Scriptures we have as 'God breathed.'
As he writes, 'the Scriptures are supposed to mean what they
say,' and it is obvious Moses wrote what God inspired him to write.
If God had meant 'angels' were being spoken of here He would
have had Moses write it down as so and He did not!
The Scriptures DO mean what they say.
